Trail running shoes Salomon Speedcross 4
Preferred use: trail running
Pros: Light, comfortable with good traction
Cons: No cons for trail running, not so much protection for hiking
Other comments: Trail runners are ideal for the purpose they were intended, trail running. While they can work for hiking, they do not offer much foot, toe and heel protection.
Hiking / approach shoes Salomon X Ultra 3
Preferred use: day hiking / multi-day hiking / long distance hiking
Pros: Lightweight, quick-drying, good grip and reasonable for protection
Cons: Does not really offer ankle support, not ideal for carrying heavy weights
Other comments: 1 kg on your feet is equal to 5 kgs on your back. I prefer lightweight hiking shoes.
Hiking boots Salomon Outback 500 GTX
Preferred use: mountaineering
Pros: Great ankle and foot support for heavier weights, rough terrain climbs and crampons
Cons: Heavier than necessary for regular hiking
Other comments: The only time when I use boots is when doing a mountaineering expedition with rough terrain and carrying a heavy pack and gear. Otherwise, I rather avoid the extra weight of boots.
Other hiking shoes:
Crocs for camp shoes and river crossings
Pros: Light, comfortable and offering some foot protection
Cons: Not an ideal fashion statement, hahaha
