Hiking sandals

Hi there,

I usually wear hiking boots on ruff terrain and hiking sandals on smooth terrain. It keep my feet dry and aired but what’s your feel about hiking sandals?

A bit late to post but , I started hiking with sandals and did the Fish River Canyon with my sandals(except for going down). Will do most my hikes in them , terrain and weather permitting.

Pro’s : No blisters. Easy water crossings.

Con ? : you have to get used to it before going on a long hike.

T-Rockets are awesome, various models to suit needs.

On my second pair, need to get another this year. I find they last me about 3 years of almost daily use. I still prefer a bit more protection if hiking with a backpack, but they’re great for well-groomed trails, or fast and lite on-trail.

Ya, I wondered if there is anybody else doing the sandal thing. I found if you hike with boots and reach the overnight camp, kick the boots off and slip in sandals. That way your feet get air and get a chance to dry out. I also took a 15km hike with sandals, funny enough I use Hush puppies sandals. At first I was a bit scared of slipping but the sandals handled that very well.

Ya, hiking with sandals is new to South Africans. I remember back in 1986 when I became a mountain guide, I took these german group out. 90% of them was over 60. I thought I am going to work for my money on this one but what a breeze. The first day I noticed that one of the old men had two backpacks on( those days it was still “H- frames”) and another guy had this fold-up backpack that had a keg on it. When we reached to summet, the one with the keg skrew a tap in it and start poring beer for everyone. I was 16 at that stage but they told me that the beer was light and it would only give us energy. It was the most delightful group I ever took out and one to always remember.

What I forgot to mention was that all of them hiked in leather sandals.( Close toe and close hil)
