How to book Boontjieskloof and Crystal Pools Huts

Some friends and I are doing a hike from Pakhuis Pass (Rocklands) to Algeria campsite through Cape Nature Cederberg Mountains.

Do we need any permits?
And do we need to book the Boontjieskloof Hut and Crystal Pools Hut?

I just found out that booking and overnight permit can be booked through Algeria campsite but you need to go in person.
They referred me to Cape Nature online bookings but when I emailed them they weren’t able to assist me.

Hmm, strange. I’ve definitely booked by email with them over the years. Also by phone which is often quicker. You just have to tell them what sections you are going to be in on what days as there is a capacity limit .Can find this on the maps on CN website, labeled like section A,B,C or some such.

Have hiked there more than a dozen time I would guess and never had to book in person. So unless something has changed would just try again and see if you get someone more knowledgeable. I just try be clear about what I’m booking and don’t really speak to routes. Eg, book 2 overnight days in section A of reserve on these dates for x people (Minimum of 3 I think).

I have found if you try and mention routes or locations it often triggers weird things where they try and align you to and lock you into specific hikes. Which often have different prices linked to them etc. Had this the other day with Groot Winterhoek another wilderness area, where no matter how I described what I was doing it got turned into X named hike which had a different cost. It was a minor difference so just paid it and went hiking

Just spotted original question haha. Yes you need hiking permits and to pay the conservation fees, and no as far as I know you don’t need to book the huts. They only let X number of people into each section a day.

If you don’t have a slingsby map for the area that would be highly highly recommended.
