We’re heading to Lotheni in the Drakenberg soon and there seems to be 2 different roads you can take to get there from the N3 as shown below.
Does anyone know which of the 2 roads would be better?
Also depends on yr vehicle. Big 4x4 or small hatchback, makes a diffs.
The upper one’s gravel winding section was graded in Oct/Nov last year and we found it to be very pleasant. The tarred section before that had many potholes with local farmers doing repairs with concrete…(between Nottingham Rd and Kamberg turn-off which slowed driving down quite a bit)
Lower one we only used to Stepmore and then headed to Underberg, then Boston etc. So cannot comment on that. But what we saw was fine.
As a rule I find most Regional roads have nasty pothole surprises with little to no shoulder. Gravel quality depends on recent grading and rain.
Try this thread on VE as there are a few folk there who are guides and use those roads loads. Info up to date…
