Hi guys, I was able to get a booking for the Otter Trail as that’s definitely a trail on my bucket list. However I’m going into this completely alone and completely blind and unfortunately my car is not in any condition to be making long distance travels (I live in Gauteng).
I was looking at travel options with busses and shuttles but I couldn’t really find much, I was really hoping that there would be transport stops to the starting hut and then from the ending hut to a bus stop where I could take a bus back to Gauteng.
Does anyone perhaps any advice or should I just try and see if I can’t take a car and ride there by myself?
On a side note, the starting and ending of the hike seem to be different, so how does the parking work in that case?
PS: What’s the safety like on the trail? Have there been any incidents in the past?
Hello. We hiked the Otter trail last in December 2021. We stayed in Storms River Village and then got a lift a from a chap called Burton, who was great. He took us to the start at Storms River and collected us again at the end, at Natures Valley. You could probably take a bus of plane to PE and he would be able to collect you from there. Re. safety … we certainly came across a lot more “locals” on the trail, who are now fishing in the area, and even a “bergie” before heading down to the Bloukrans. All huts have trellis doors, but must are broken and on the last night, there was security around until 9pm. I’d suggest taking some cable ties so you can lock yourself in. That said,we didnt experience any issues. I’d be happy to give you Burtons contact number if you would like. Regards Christine
We have used Vernon a few times in the past for shuttle service. Very reliable guy and doesn’t rip you off.
Burton also is very good. I recommend him as well
