Can I please get recommendations of hiking apps that can accurately track ones route in South Africa?
If you’re on Android, “All-In-One Offline Maps” lives up to its name: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.psyberia.offlinemaps&hl=en_ZA&gl=US
Full-featured and lists many existing trails because it draws from the OpenStreetMaps database.
For iOS, Strava is probably the best-known free tracking app.
I’m a huge fan of Komoot.
- Free open source maps for your home country, you’ll need to buy a global offline map if you plan on using it internationally, but it’s relatively cheap R500 once off, or a subscription if you want all the features.
- Create your own tours.
- Tours can be downloaded prior for offline use.
- You can import and edit .gpx files of tours.
- Not heavy on the battery, I seem to recall.
I recently started using AlpineQuest. Seems to get the job done quite well. Not very user-friendly but it has all the bells and whistles.
AllTrails works prety well for me. It has a lot of community knowledge.
I Used Wikiloc quite recently. It worked fine. I would like to have higher resolution offline topographical maps though.
I use Guru Maps on iOS - it’s fee. No registration.
Free offline tracking - also export as gpx file.
You only have to download once the topographic map for SA.
I am very happy with it.
Hi,
You can use Komoot for free, or upgrade to get additional benefits.
The app can be used for hiking, biking, running, and more.
Enjoy!

This should have been a poll.
